This will be the third home bout of the 2014 season for CGRG, who return to their home track following a close loss to one of their favorite rivals, Southern Illinois Roller Girls (SIRG) out of Marion. The Springfield team will play their first 2014 bout at home against SIRG next month.
CGRG is in its fifth season, giving the home team—relatively new by derby standards—an unusual advantage over an even newer team, as MMRD was not established until 2011. Still, these athletes are evenly matched on the track, and this promises to be another action-packed match, explains CGRG founder, Sue Bob Fight (aka Julie Moser). “While CGRG has never played against MMRD, many of us have played with their skaters on occasion. They are a very skilled team and we are excited to play them in what will surely be a tough, close scoring bout.”
The CGRG is a 501c4 nonprofit organization, and the team donates a portion of every bout to a local charity. Last month the team chose Southeast Hospice as the nonprofit recipient and will present the donation at halftime. In February the Cape Girardeau Roller Girls donated $500 to the Special Olympics, in addition to the $3,200 raised by the team during the Special Olympics Polar Plunge previously that month.
This month’s donation recipient is Beacon Health Center. Other charities designated this season as beneficiaries of the team’s good will include the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Foundation, Beacon Health Center, and the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.
The CGRG takes pride in providing a family-friendly atmosphere. After every bout the fans are invited down to the track for photos and autographs, and children are encouraged to jump into the team photo. All home bouts are held at the A.C. Brase Arena. Doors open at 5:00 p.m., and the main bout begins at approximately 7:00. Discounted tickets can be purchased in advance at Pitter’s Café, PMac Music and from any roller girl for $7 or online at www.brownpapertickets.com; tickets can be purchased for $9 at the door the night of the bout.
